Our new season begins in October 2023! Join us for Tai Chi and Qigong at the Regent Centre on Locke Street South.

December 2019 / January 2020 Holiday Schedule

This year we're blessed with a schedule that will for the most part allow us to carry on business as usual. If you're available to come out for a class or two, they will probably be running.

Note there will be NO CLASSES on the following dates:

Wednesday, December 25, 2019
Thursday, December 26, 2019
Wednesday, January 1st, 2020

All other classes will be on, but don't worry if your holiday schedule requires you to be away. From December 23 to January 2nd, beginner's classes will be focused on review, and continuing classes on mellow, relaxed stretching and strengthening.

If we don't see you over the next couple of weeks, I wish you all a very merry holiday season, and a happy and healthy New Year.

Cheers,
Melissa.

Classes cancelled Monday, December 2; 2019

Due to weather among other things,  classes are cancelled for Monday, December 2 2019. Because of the way my email list works, you may receive this message late. Please always check the website for information about cancellations due to weather. Thanks!

Qigong Workshop, Sunday, December 8, 2019, 1-5pm

It's been too long since I ran a Qigong workshop! It's wonderful--dare I say bordering on decadent?--to set aside a whole afternoon to focus on deliberate, slow, stretchy movement and meditation. What's amazing about Qigong in a workshop format is how body and mind respond to taking all the time we need to ease into our practice. Setting up ideal circumstances for our practice isn't always possible, but this is why workshop days are particularly nice.

The theme of this workshop will be relaxing the body while encouraging the mind to focus. We'll also be working with allowing the mind to flow as we do a trance journey meditation. This is a very special practice in which we allow our minds to present us with imagery as we listen to (prerecorded) drums. With Winter Solstice just a short time away, it's the perfect moment to go within and seek guidance for the season to come. Trance journey meditations are often profound and uplifting experiences that leave us energized and full of enthusiasm for what's to come.

For people who have experience with Qigong, this is going to be a great day to deepen your practice. For those who haven't done Qigong in a workshop context before, you're in for a treat.

Space is limited: please let me know ahead of time if you wish to attend. Contact me at (905) 521-0043 or smithmk2@gmail.com, or tell me in person at class.

For those who wish to participate, I'll be observing two minutes of silence at 11 am, at the beginning of the break between Continuing Class and Qigong.

No Classes on Halloween, Thursday, October 31

Just a quick reminder that our evening classes on Thursday, October 31st are cancelled so we can be spooky at home and appease goblins by giving them candy!

All classes will run as usual in November.

Surprise! Open Workout on Sunday, October 27 and Upcoming Qigong Workshop, Sunday, December 8, 2019

Greetings!

OPEN WORKOUT, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2019
Location: 150 Locke Street South
Time:  1:00-3:30pm
Fee: No charge
*Qigong session, 1-2pm, is open to everyone
*Tai Chi sessions, 2-3:30, are for intermediate and continuing students

I booked the studio at the Regent Health Centre for a workshop this coming Sunday, October 27, 2019, and then failed to plan anything for it, in all the rush of getting classes going this month. SO I'll be using the time to run an open workout. This is a session you can attend for no additional cost, if you have the time, and you want to come practice. The schedule:

1-2pm: Qigong
This will be a 101 flow session during which we'll stretch and move and focus our minds. Like my regular Qigong classes, it's open to everyone including beginners, no experience required. (If you're a Tai Chi Beginner and you haven't tried Qigong yet, this is a great opportunity to come give it a whirl! If you're already a student at The Regent Centre and you want to bring a friend, please invite them! There's no charge for this session.)

2-2:45pm: Intermediate and Continuing Tai Chi
Come practice and ask all your questions! Experience with the whole Tai Chi set is required.

2:45-3:30: Other Internal Martial Arts
We'll run through Sabre, Hsing-I, Sword, and Lok Hup—to help you remember the sets you might have forgotten. I won't be teaching these sets from scratch—this is a practice session for those who have already worked with them.

If you'd like to come, please RSVP at smithmk2@gmail.com or (905) 521-0043.

QIGONG WORKSHOP, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2019

For those of you who wish class lasted a lot longer, and who want to do a deeper dive on some of the techniques and exercises we cover, this is the workshop for you! We'll celebrate the impending winter equinox with a slow, stretchy, and contemplative afternoon. In addition to working with warm-up exercises and Eight Silk Brocades, this workshop will include a shamanic trance journey—a form of meditation where we use drumming to assist us—to enhance your experience and set you up for a beautiful holiday season.

Location: 150 Locke Street South
Time:  1-5pm
Fee: $60
Open to everyone, no prior experience required.

RSVP at smithmk2@gmail.com or (905) 521-0043.

Coming this Fall: Thursday Evening Classes, New Beginners Instructors, More Chi for Your Monthly Dollar!

Greetings!

Although classes are winding down in anticipation of my annual break in September, I'm already eagerly looking forward to the fall, and some changes I've planned to make to the schedule.

New Thursday Evening Tai Chi Classes
For a while now I've wanted to offer Tai Chi classes on a weekday evening. I'm hoping this will enable folks who work 9-5 to more easily come learn from us! (We also offer Saturday afternoon classes.)  The Thursday evening program will be:

Tai Chi Beginners 7:30-8:30pm
Tai Chi Intermediate and Continuing 8:30-9:30pm

Tai Chi Beginners also runs on Mondays afternoons, Wednesday afternoons, and Saturday afternoons. For more information on Tai Chi Beginners, go here.

You can view the complete Tai Chi and Qigong class schedule and get information about our extraordinarily reasonable fees here.

New Beginners Instructors
In addition to me (Melissa) and Gillianne Shaver, who teaches our Wednesday program, I'm delighted to announce that Marilyn Nazar and Sam Rush are joining our instructional team. Come benefit from their wit and wisdom on Saturday afternoons and Thursday evenings!

Upcoming Hiatus
All classes will be on pause in September 2019. The new Tai Chi and Qigong season will start on October 4, 2019! I hope you'll join us!

August and September 2019 News for Classes at the Regent Centre

Greetings! August is the final month for Tai Chi and Qigong at the Regent Centre before I take my annual hiatus in September. Some dates of note:

There will be NO CLASSES on Friday, August 9th, Saturday, August 10th, or Monday, August 12. Mark your calendars! Otherwise, all classes will run as usual, including classes throughout the August long weekend.

There are two workshops this month.

August 4th, 2019, I'm running a Qigong and meditation workshop at the Regent Centre from 1-5pm. We'll be exploring the composition of the human energy field, how to perceive your own field, how to work with it and the energies of others, and what happens to this field when we practice Qigong (spoiler: great things!). Understanding your own field is a fun and important aspect of practicing Tai Chi and Qigong. If you'd like to join us, please confirm your attendance by emailing me at smithmk2@gmail.com, or calling (905) 521-0043. This workshop is open to all levels of practice, but I would like to know ahead of time that you plan to attend. The cost is $60.

August 18th, 2019, we'll be taking a walk at Eramosa Karst from 1-4pm. Walking in nature is a fundamentally great way to refresh your energies, release stale tensions, and connect with joy. I'll share some information about local plants, and we'll talk about communication with plants, trees, and animals. Email at smithmk2@gmail.com or call (905) 521-0043 for more details and to book your place. Suggested donation of $15. NOTE: this activity will involve a slow, easy walk on mostly flat terrain, but because the Karst doesn't have many places to sit, you should be able to stay on your feet for a couple of hours at a time, and walk for two or three kilometres if you'd like to join us.

September 2019
This year, my co-instructor, Gillianne Shaver, will also be away throughout September, so if you've been learning with us this year, September will be a great month to engage with solo practice, or meet up in a park for a practice session with your classmates. For me, September is the month during which I rest, recharge, and pursue my own practice in a deeper way than I'm able to throughout the year. There will be no classes at the Regent Centre during September.

Looking ahead to October 2019, classes will be starting up again on Friday, October 4th. The schedule will remain largely the same as this past year, although I'm looking to add an evening Beginner's Tai Chi and Continuing Class. If you've been waiting for an evening class, stay tuned!

To make sure you don't miss any news, subscribe by email. You can always unsubscribe if you decide you no longer want updates.

Note: if you've received this message by email, don't hit reply: your message will go into the void! Make sure my address, smithmk2@gmail.com, is in the "To" field.

Tai Chi for Beginners, October 2019

If you're interested in learning Tai Chi from the very beginning, welcome! The set I teach takes a few months to learn from beginning to end. The next beginner's session will start on Saturday, October 5th. Beginner's classes will run on Saturdays from 2-3pm, and Wednesdays from 2:00-3:15pm.

Learning Tai Chi is a commitment. It works best if you remember to practice a little bit when you get home from your lesson, then spend a few minutes each day going over what you remember. Beyond that, coming to class and being prepared to be patient with yourself are your best assets.

Tai Chi is an incredible tool for healing and health maintenance, and a beautiful form of meditation. It can be adapted to be very gentle. When performed correctly, it can help restructure the entire body. Many people are surprised to learn that it can be a very challenging workout.

For more information, go to the Tai Chi for Beginners page. I hope you'll join us this fall!

To sign up, contact Melissa Smith at (905) 521-0043 or smithmk2@gmail.com.

Spiritual Development Workshop

This workshop will involve a slow walk during which we'll pay conscious attention to the surrounding landscape. I'll share some information about local plants, and we'll talk about communication with wild trees, plants, and animals.

Contact me at (905) 521-0043 or smithmk2@gmail.com.

The first workshop series will explore the five elements. Stay tuned for more information!

Lok Hup Workshop, Sunday, July 7, 2019 and Long Weekend Class Schedule

Some of you have asked about the July 1st long weekend schedule. All classes will run as usual through the long weekend. If you're up for a workout, I'll look forward to seeing you at class!

The theme for July's workshop will be Lok Hup Ba Fa. We'll be diving into this set once more for review and polishing. If you've studied this set in the past, then this workshop is appropriate for you! If you haven't let me know that you're coming, please confirm so I can plan the day.

Lok Hup Ba Fa Workshop Details
Date: Sunday, July 7, 2019

Qigong Workshop

A quick note to say I'm shifting the upcoming Qigong workshop to August 4th, 2019. There wasn't enough interest in it this time around to run it this coming Sunday, June 2nd. There will be no workshop on that day, but all regular classes will run as usual. (I know you're all busy!)

So let me know if you'd like to attend on the 4th, and sorry for any inconvenience.  The July 7 workshop will focus on Lok Kup Ba Fa once more, if that suits you.

Take care and hope to see you at class!

Qigong Workshop, Sunday June 2, 2019

Qigong Workshop
Date: Sunday, June 2, 2019
Time: 1-5pm
Cost: $60
Location: Regent Health Centre, 150 Locke St. South
Prerequisite: None

Please contact me to let me know you'd like to attend: smithmk2@gmail.com, (905) 521-0043, or in person.

It's time to ease into Summer! This workshop will focus on Five Elements Qigong, a routine designed to help us build leg strength and harmonize us with the warm and rich energies of this season. We'll also work with standing and sitting Qigong meditation, forms designed to relax and focus our minds and refresh our spirits.

Holiday Reminder, Construction Information, Acupressure Routines, and a Cool Video About the Nervous System

....that is quite a title!

A reminder that classes are on hold for this upcoming weekend. There will be no classes on Friday, May 10, Saturday, May 11, and Monday, May 13, 2019. All other classes will run as usual throughout the month of May, including the holiday weekend.

***

There's been an update about upcoming construction plans for Locke Street. This is my best information as of this time (note I didn't write this—this comes from the construction folks):

Locke street will be CLOSED between Canada and Melbourne Streets starting on May 21st, 2019. ( just after the long weekend). THESE SIDE STREETS WILL BE CONVERTED TO TWO WAY TRAFFIC AS PER THE ATTACHED PLAN TO ASSIST WITH ACCESS. Your patrons/visitors to the area can still gain access
Access to Locke Street from Main will remain open up to Canada street during this time as well.
This closure is the first phase of works to allow the contractor full access to begin the underground works along the west side ( new watermain and water services) and catch basins along this side as well.
Within these limits of the closure, sidewalks will remain open so that people can still get to their destinations.
So the easiest way for patrons/visitors to Locke street should be Melbourne to Poulette to the parking lot behind Star Bucks and head over to Blessings Church at Stanley and Locke via Chatham street.
***

This past Monday we ran through an acupressure routine for the jaw, neck, and ear. This routine comes from a wonderful collection that is extremely handy for a wide variety of issues. It's always a great idea to learn more about points, how to find them on yourself, and how to use sequences of points massage to help heal yourself. Learn how to deal with headache, local pain, and nervous system issues like insomnia here at Free Online Acupressure

***

We talk a lot in class about the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems (at least, I feel like I talk about them a lot), but there are some fascinating new emerging theories about how they work. In this lecture from Nerd Nite, Seth Porges delivers a ton of helpful information about the nervous system, fight, flight, and freeze states, how these states influence perception, and the lingering effects of trauma on the body. (Sidebar: there's one little section where for some reason Porges decides to rip on the concepts of chi and the chakras...honestly I really wish scientists would refrain from comment on fields in which they have no training. But he does have a ton of cool things to say about the vagus nerve, so definitely worth a listen.)

For those of you who are studying push hands, one way to view that practice is to understand that we're trying to learn how to fight while remaining in the green light / relaxed state. Quite a trick! (And the reason why it takes so much training.)

Enjoy!

2019 Easter Weekend, Beginner's Classes, and May Schedule

I hope everyone is enjoying the heck out of spring! Some information on what's going on at the Regent Centre:

Easter Weekend Classes

There will be NO classes on Good Friday, April 19, 2019.

Classes on Saturday, April 20 and Monday, April 22 will run as usual.

The Spiritual Development workshop will run as planned on Sunday, April 21st, 1-4pm. (If you haven't already let me know you plan to attend that workshop, please do!)

Beginner's Classes

The new round of beginner's classes that Gillianne and I tried to launch at the beginning of April seem to have gone by the wayside. We blame the construction on Locke Street! We know it makes it very difficult for people to access the Centre. For now, we're putting new beginner's classes on hold. The Saturday class (2-3pm) and the Wednesday class (2:00-3:15) will both be open practice sessions for anyone who wants to attend. For the past week or so, that has meant intermediate Tai Chi training. Please come by for lessons that will meet you at your level!

Brand new beginner's classes will be on indefinite hold, until the parking situation on Locke Street gets a little bit more reasonable.

May Workshop

By request, the topic of the May 5, 2019 workshop will be Lok Hup Ba Fa. More information:

Lok Hup Ba Fa Workshop
Date: Sunday, May 5, 2019
Time: 1-5pm
Cost: $60
Location: Regent Health Centre, 150 Locke St. South
Prerequisite: Previous training in Lok Hup Ba Fa

Please contact me to let me know you'd like to attend: smithmk2@gmail.com, (905) 521-0043, or in person.

This workshop will focus on polishing, refining, and smoothing out the lumps from our Lok Hup Ba Fa practice. If you've studied Lok Hup before, whether with me at the Regent Centre or elsewhere, this is your opportunity to revisit and reconnect with this challenging and invigorating set!

May Class Cancellations

I will be out of town and there will be no classes on Friday, May 10, Saturday, May 11, and Monday, May 13, 2019.

Construction Info

As of now, it looks like the construction on Locke Street will be ongoing into the fall. The Centre has received a heads up that there may be a day or two in the future where, due to the sidewalk replacement out front, the building might not be accessible. We might not know until the same day when this is going to happen. I can inform you by placing a notice on the website at taichionlocke.blogspot.com, but that won't be timely, since these posts take a few hours to end up in your email inbox. I'm compiling an email list of your addresses if you want me to keep you updated directly with regard to any construction news. Email me at smithmk2@gmail.com and ask that your name be added to the list!

NOTE: If you've received this post by email, and you want to respond to it, please don't hit reply! Your message will go into the void. Make sure my address: smithmk2@gmail.com is in the "To" field, or start a new message to that address if you need to write to me. Thanks!

Upcoming Workshop Reminders

A quick (and belated) reminder that the Spiritual Development workshop will run as usual March 24, from 1-4pm. If you plan to attend, and you haven't let me know already, please do!

The April workshop will focus on Lok Hup Ba Fa. If you've worked on the set previously, and you'd like to polish it, this your time! Details:

New Tai Chi Beginners Classes Start April 2019

If you've been wanting to take Tai Chi from the very beginning but haven't been sure when to start, now's your time! Or rather, the first week of April, 2019.

Tai Chi is a wonderful way to get a whole-body workout, and to challenge yourself to learn a new way of moving that will help you with everything you need to do throughout your day. Tai Chi is a great way to improve lower body strength and flexibility, remobilize stiff joints, and undo injuries (old and new!) and the effects of chronic stresses and strains. The form we do is 108 moves long, and is for anyone who wants to sink into a substantial practice.

The new Tai Chi Beginner's Cycle will start on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019. Classes will run on Wednesdays at 2:15-3:30pm, and Saturdays from 2-3pm. Your monthly fee ($40 regular; $20 students / financial need / people on ODSP) covers you for all Beginner's classes and, if you wish, Qigong classes on Mondays (11:15-12:15pm) and Fridays (3-4pm).

To register, or for more information, contact Melissa Smith at (905) 521-0043 or smithmk2@gmail.com.

Holiday Weekend Classes are On + Upcoming Workshops

Dear All,

I've had a couple of people ask after classes this coming weekend, particularly the holiday Monday. All classes are running as usual, including classes on Monday, February 18, 2019. Note that I am away this weekend, but Gillianne and Vince will be covering classes. Please come out if you can and support them, and your own practice! It's always good to work out regardless of whether I'm there or not!

Mark Your Calendars:

The Spiritual Development workshop, which was originally scheduled for this coming Sunday, will run on February 24, 2019. This workshop runs from my home. This time around we'll be focusing on ways to welcome in the fresh energies of the Lunar New Year.

On Sunday, March 3rd, 2019, I'm offering a Qigong workshop at the Regent Centre, 150 Locke St. South, from 1-5pm. This workshop will focus on cultivating inner peace through a focused mind. Despite one notable interruption, January's Qigong workshop was absolutely wonderful. I hope you'll join us this time around!

After February's Lok Hup Ba Fa workshop, I decided to offer another one in April, so look for the return of Lok Hup on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

Please email me at smithmk2@gmail.com and let me know if you would like to attend any of these workshops, or inquire there or at 905 521-0043 for more information.

NOTE: If you're receiving this message by email, please don't hit reply--your answer will go into the void! Add my email address is in the "to" line, or start a new email to smithmk2@gmail.com if you wish to correspond with me. Thanks!

Classes are Cancelled for January 19, 2019

Saturday classes at Regent Health Centre are cancelled due to the weather.

NOTE: If you're receiving this message by email, it will be arriving late--the system that pushes notifications through to email does so hours after I post to the blog. Always check for live updates about weather on the blog itself, in the hour before class.

Upcoming Workshops, January 20 2019 and February 3 2019

A quick reminder: the next Spiritual Development Workshop will run this coming Sunday, January 20, 2019, from 1-4pm. As usual, this workshop is run from my home. The idea behind these workshops is to offer an opportunity for participants to reflect on their own personal journeys, and to talk about how to use the practices we're working with in class to enhance or improve whatever intentions you're setting for yourself.  You can read more about the philosophy behind these workshops here.

We've got another workshop coming up at the Regent Centre (150 Locke St. South) on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019, from 1-5pm. This time around we're going to be returning to the advanced internal martial art form Lok Hup Ba Fa. This workshop is for people who have already studied Lok Hup, whether with me or elsewhere. Even if you've done it and you don't remember it as well as you'd like to, that's fine: we'll be spending the day polishing, refining, and going over some sequences to try to bring everyone up to speed.

For those of you who participated in the January Qigong workshop, and wanted to do another, I'll be running the next Qigong workshop at the Regent Centre on March 3rd, 2019.

You can find more information about all upcoming workshops here.

If you'd like to join any of the workshops or have questions, please email me at smithmk2@gmail.com, or call or text (905) 521-0043.

Note: If you've received this notice by email, don't hit reply if you want to respond--your message will go into the void! Make sure my email address, smithmk2@gmail.com, is in the subject line, or start a new email addressed to me.

A last note on the weather: with impending wintery-ness, please use your own discretion with regard to whether it's safe for you to drive to the Centre! In extreme cases where the weather genuinely looks grim and I cannot make it to class, I'll post a cancellation note at the top of the blog, at taichionlocke.blogspot.com an hour prior to the class start time.
